Carabao are one of Thailand's most iconic and enduring rock bands and a pillar of phleng phuea chiwit ("songs for life"). Formed in 1981 by frontman Yuenyong "Aed" Opakul — later named a Thai National Artist — the band met while studying architecture in the Philippines and took their name, meaning "buffalo," as a symbol of hard work and resilience. They fuse Western rock and folk with Thai melody and sharply observed lyrics about ordinary people and social injustice. Their landmark album Made in Thailand (1984) is among the best-selling Thai records ever, and the band remains a touring institution to this day.
