Maleehuana are a southern Thai songs-for-life band, formed in 1991 out of a circle of art students and friends from other trades who had come to live in Bangkok. At the centre are Kathawut Thongthai — 'Ajarn Khai' — an art student from Lampai in Thepha district, Songkhla, and Thongchai Rakrong, a musician who had been playing bars in the south. They appeared when Thai music was full of alternative rock and seemed to have no room for anything else: simple instruments, a southern-accented voice nobody else had, and flowing melodies over a broken-up guitar tone.
