21 Savage is a rapper from Atlanta. His third solo album, american dream, arrived in January 2024 in the wake of his collaborative album and tour with Drake, and is a reminder of what one of Atlanta's finest can do on his own. It opens with a minute-long interlude over a sample of Rose Royce's 1977 single 'Wishing On A Star'. Rather than songs rooted in triumph, which is what a listener might expect, he gives most of the weight to death, corruption and the brutal realities of life in the hard-nosed Atlanta streets. The title plays both sides of the American dream — the aspiration to success, and its inversion. His music is never overwrought, and his credibility as a master of menace remains intact.
