Alicia Keys is an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Since her debut album Songs in A Minor in 2001 she has had three consecutive records debut at No. 1 on the US charts; The Element of Freedom broke that streak by entering at No. 2, then went to No. 1 in the UK, a first for her, and was praised for its subtle and engaging songwriting. She has worked alongside performers of the same scale, Jay-Z and Beyoncé among them. 'Empire State of Mind' appears on both Jay-Z's record and her own, hers given a slightly slower treatment. She felt it while they were making it, she says — she did not know exactly what it was, but she knew she felt something really strong.
