Charlie Puth is an American singer, songwriter and producer from New Jersey. His 2017 album Voicenotes was well received, but at the end of 2019 he heard the words no artist wants to hear — from Elton John, that his music that year had been bad. He changed course after that and took full ownership of what he was making. His third album, Charlie, arrived in October 2022, self-titled by design. He used TikTok in a way that, as he puts it, made fans feel like they wrote the music with him, opening up his process from the lead single 'Light Switch', where he flips the sound of an actual light switch into both a romantic metaphor and a catchy beat. That video took off immediately, and he kept showing the other songs as they came together.
