Deftones are a band from Sacramento fronted by Chino Moreno, with guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham and sampler-keyboardist Frank Delgado. As a teenager in the eighties Moreno listened to metal and Morrissey alike — he thought he was kind of weird, he laughs, listening to goth music and Rush at the same time — and that sensibility became an essential piece of the band's sound: deeply emotional vocals, by turns ethereal and biting, set against waves of thunder and atmosphere. Their tenth album, private music, is their first with bassist Fred Sablan: eleven songs built from evocative walls of sound, opening on the pummel of 'my mind is a mountain'. For all that he is a compelling presence live, Moreno says he is still nervous every time before he goes on stage.
