French Montana is a rapper who came up in Casablanca, Morocco. His family left for New York when he was thirteen and settled in the Bronx; he arrived fluent in French and Arabic with only a little English, and hip-hop became the catalyst for learning the language of his new home. Rapping was just a hobby at first, he says — he figured out it was a career when he got his first check, off the Cocaine City DVDs he started putting out in 2002, raw uncut interviews with artists like Jadakiss, 50 Cent and Young Jeezy interspersed with his own music. The DVDs were always the plan for getting on as a rapper, he says: a platform, a stepping stone. Having built a following there, he released the Mac & Cheese, Coke Boys and Casino Life mixtape series that made his name. Across his career he has kept building a bridge between the South Bronx and North Africa.
