Kong Huayrai is a singer-songwriter from Ban Huay Rai in Sakon Nakhon. He came to Bangkok looking for work after finishing school, studying law at Ramkhamhaeng University at the same time. At first he worked construction with his uncle for a little over a hundred baht a day — fitting insulation, carrying cement, mixing it, doing everything — to save for a student uniform; once term started and daily work became impossible, he moved to playing guitar and singing outside the university gates. His song 'Sai Wa Si Bo Thim Kan' already had tens of millions of views among Isan listeners before Khaimook Rungrat sang it in the Knock Out round of The Voice Thailand and carried it across the country. As he tells it: a song you would only hear on the molam stages back home, listened to by Isan people, became a song everyone in every region heard.
