Lil Wayne grew up in Hollygrove, in New Orleans's 17th Ward. He began out of a love for late-eighties and early-nineties hip hop and rap-tinged R&B, signing to the cult-legendary local label Cash Money Records at twelve as one half of the duo The B.G.'z. He then joined The Hot Boys, whose ranks included Juvenile, a local rapper already making his own name, and got his first taste of pop stardom when the group's 1999 album Guerrilla Warfare entered the Billboard charts at number five. He has barely stopped releasing since — albums, mixtapes, and guest verses on other people's records.
