Maroon 5's first album, Songs About Jane, slipped quietly into shops on 25 June 2002 and has since climbed past ten million copies worldwide. Most of the members had been gigging together since the mid-nineties as Kara's Flowers, and in an era when a newly signed band's chances were thin, a great deal was riding on the record. The opening single, 'Harder To Breathe', is about exactly that pressure: Adam Levine later admitted it was a late addition, written after the band were pushed for more material even though they thought they already had enough.
