New York City Opera was founded in 1943 as 'The People's Opera' by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and the City of New York, with a purpose written into its name: high-quality opera at prices people could afford, and a stage for American singers. Laszlo Halasz was its first general director; the first performance was Puccini's Tosca at City Center on 21 February 1944. Within two years it had begun performing operas in English and giving American singers their early debuts, and it broke racial barriers on its stage before that was common anywhere.
