Tortoise began in the early nineties, when the musicians were all living together in an old warehouse loft in Chicago. They blend jazz, rock and electronics, and have carried the torch for instrumental post-rock ever since. The core has been John McEntire, Doug McCombs, Dan Bitney, John Herndon and Jeff Parker. Many take their second album, Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996), as the peak; the record that defined them is the one after it, TNT (1998), still a crucial reference point for the whole genre. Touch is their first studio album in almost a decade.
