Akon is a Senegalese-American singer and songwriter who built a chart-topping career on hip-hop and R&B — 'I Wanna Love You', 'Smack That' — and has been nominated for five GRAMMYs. He has also worked in dance music and released a Spanish-language album, El Negreeto, in 2019. More recently he has begun carving a lane in country music, which he calls a passion project and a chance to finally do what he always wanted to do. Now fully independent and the owner of his masters, he says, he is free to do what he needs to and put his money where he wants it. In 2025 he released 'Drunk Right Now' with the rising country singer Josh Ross, a reimagined version of his own 2008 hit.
