BAND-MAID are a five-piece Japanese rock band: founder and rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato, vocalist SAIKI, guitarist KANAMI and drummer AKANE. Their single 'What is justice?' arrived in July 2025 as the ending theme for the anime TOUGEN ANKI, which inverts the Momotaro fable — the swordsman hero's descendants become the oppressors and the Oni demons the morally complex protagonists. Miku wrote the lyrics to fit that world, and the question about justice at its centre lands as a challenge rather than a pop hook. The composition leans into heavier, darker soundscapes, as their earlier tie-in for Rock Is a Lady's Modesty did, and the video reflects the band's move from blithe servitude to counter-cultural defiance.
