Air are the French duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Their early singles led to the debut album Moon Safari, much of it tracked at Nicolas' apartment on an Akai S1000 sampler before the first songs moved to a digital eight-track and then to a real studio in Paris for mixing. They have worked in a number of studios since and eventually built their own. A continuing theme of their studio work is the desire to change their sound, find new ones and confound listeners' expectations; rarely does something sound futuristic and familiar at once. Lately they have spent more than twenty months on the road marking Moon Safari's twenty-fifth anniversary, alongside a deluxe box set with a remastered album and unreleased demos, Blue Moon Safari — a full reimagining by the producer Vegyn — and an appearance at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. "I feel like I'm living in 1998," Godin says.
