Black Eyed Peas are a hip-hop group from Los Angeles, and their story is one of relentless hustle. It began in 1988 at Estrada Courts, the housing project in predominantly Chicano East Los Angeles, when a thirteen-year-old will.i.am met a fourteen-year-old apl.de.ap. Will called himself the neighbourhood dude, the guy who could dance; apl had grown up in the Philippines and did not speak a word of English. The two bonded over break dancing and rap battles, started making beats together, and ended up competing with their own crews. The line-up took shape later at Ballistics, a Hollywood club for aspiring and established rappers, where they met Taboo.
