Ed Sheeran is a British singer-songwriter. Play, his eighth studio album, draws on Indian and Persian influences and marks a turn away from the darker, more subdued records before it. Its first single, 'Azizam', takes its name from the Persian for "my dear"; 'Sapphire' was finished in Goa and went to No. 1 in India. He cannot base his career on what America is going to think of it, he says, so he took the approach that might work globally — and it did. He wrote something like three or four hundred songs while making it, choosing the ones that favoured experimentation over commercial safety. He hopes listeners connect with a few of them, but the record was made for himself: records have to be made primarily for the artist first, he says, otherwise it is just a product.
