Matt Maltese is a British-Canadian singer-songwriter. So much of the impulse, he says, has always come from personal relationships — friends, partners, family, and the way they land on him. His fifth record, Hers, was written across roughly three years and made with a clear sense of what a live band gives a song. His lyrics embrace the melodramatic while filtering strong feeling into balance, so that even the sad endings come out romantic. It is what he had always wanted a record of his to sound like, he says: arrangements that feel warm and rich, everything he loves in music he listens to. Around it he has been running his label Last Recordings On Earth, writing for other artists, making a covers album, and scoring Twelfth Night for The Globe.
