Subsonic Eye are a five-piece indie rock band from Singapore fronted by Nur Wahidah, with Daniel Borces on guitar. There is something mathy in the sound; Borces says that when he writes the demos they come out sounding like Sonic Youth, because he loves that band, and then the whole group turns them into something else. They have a knack, he says, for taking Western influences and making them their own — and for making them a bit more complex than they need to be. Nature of Things (2021) sat with climate anxiety and a renewed appreciation of the natural world; All Around You (2023) looks at the pressures of early adulthood more optimistically. Wahidah says she used to live entirely out of rhythm with everything, and now feels she can solve most things in life by comparing them with what she sees outside.
