Real Estate are an indie rock band from Ridgewood, New Jersey, led by Martin Courtney; the band's name is a reference to his own back-up plan if the music never worked out. Their sixth studio album, Daniel, arrived in February 2024 on Domino, opening with 'Somebody New' over laid-back soft-rock acoustic guitar and pedal steel. There has been enough darkness, Courtney says, so he was trying to make something that felt light, because that is what he wanted out of music. The video for 'Water Underground' was inspired by Adventures of Pete & Pete, filmed around Leonia, New Jersey, near where the band grew up — it resonated with him as a child, he says, and with a great many people living in New Jersey then.
