V is a Korean singer and actor, an idol across the decade of his career with BTS, and recognised for his supporting role in the 2016 drama Hwarang. For three years he wrote songs continuously, showing them to fans in occasional livestreams and then starting over entirely, looking for the right direction for the solo debut that became Layover in 2023. Working on it, he found himself thinking about the larger trajectory of his career — this as BTS moved to solo work in 2022. He realised he did not want to dash toward a destination: he was someone who needed detours, new possibilities along the way, the journey itself. Instead of a direct route, he says, you could stop somewhere and stay a while, take a transfer, take a layover; his life, wherever it is headed, was never going to follow a straight line.
