Dream Theater are a progressive metal quintet who began in 1985 as Majesty, started by drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung after they met at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Vocalist James LaBrie joined in 1991 and Jordan Rudess in 1999. Their 1992 landmark Images and Words holds songs like 'Metropolis, Pt. 1', nine and a half minutes of twists and turns, and the single 'Pull Me Under', which sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time. Parasomnia (2025) is their sixteenth studio album, named after a category of sleep disorders, and marks Portnoy's return to a Dream Theater record for the first time since 2009. Petrucci says they fully understand the gravity of Mike coming back and the band being together again.
