IU is a Korean singer-songwriter, and in the worlds she builds nothing is accidental — few pop artists are as purposeful with every single step. In 2021 she released LILAC and Pieces together, two sides of her artistry: the first a widescreen pop vision, the second a pared-back, intimate slice of folk songwriting. The Winning, in 2024, was her first body of work since. Making it, she said, felt like getting the results of her devotion. Age has always been a factor in her writing, from Spring of a Twenty Year Old to the embrace of adulthood in Palette; ahead of The Winning she spoke about struggling in her late twenties to find the insights that had always driven her songs.
