The title of Mitski's The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We came to her as a joke during the pandemic: she pictured crossing a state line and seeing the welcome sign by the road, and instead of the usual slogan it read that. A joke with a kernel of truth in it. What ties the record's stories together, she says, is love — sometimes a love that is not good for you, sometimes a love that is a respite from something dark. Her seventh album is her most concise and impactful vision, set in the wide space of the countryside, its plain country feeling confirmed by the pedal steel running through it.
