Sting grew up in Wallsend, North Tyneside, on a street running down to the docks, seeing ships every day and thousands of shipyard workers passing his door. Ships were a profound symbol, he says: they are launched and go out into the world, and as a boy he wondered whether that was his destiny. Once, when a new ship was launched and the Queen Mother came to christen it, he was handed a flag to wave and she caught his eye — a moment that told him there was a bigger life out there than the one on offer. He calls himself a songwriter first, who took up the bass for various reasons. Across nearly fifty years, in The Police and alone, he has won seventeen Grammy Awards and sold more than a hundred million records.
