The newest works on record
Cigarettes After Sex is the project of songwriter and singer Greg Gonzalez. The sound is slow and melancholic, built on a less-is-more strategy: turn the lights down and set a cinematic mood with only a couple of elements. They now have some 56 million listeners on Spotify and tour stadiums. Gonzalez started somewhere else entirely — a metalhead from about twelve, whose first self-made album was a death metal cassette under the name Mortuary and whose high-school band was metal too; all that remains of that period, he says, is the all-black. The project began on a heartbroken drive over a decade ago with Sade on repeat, which put the question in his head: how do I make a record that feels like that? The band's third album, X's, comes out of his own experience of relationships, one four-year relationship in particular.
