Bubble Tea and Cigarettes are a dream pop duo, Andi Wang and Kat Zhang — a couple who met in 2019 and released their first song, '5AM Empanada With You', in July 2020. They began writing to funnel the dark, heavy emotions they could not keep contained in daily life. Their sound mixes Nouvelle Vague's chic dance pop with Mazzy Star's dreamy indie rock, accessorised with the soft glamour of City Pop, and what it captures is the tension between hypersweet and extremely numb. On 'Plane Crash', from their second album We Should Have Killed Each Other, Zhang's voice is a soft but claustrophobic whisper over subtle flourishes of pop guitar. Song titles like 'Dead Flowers' and 'French Movie' carry the same romanticised precarity.
