Porter Robinson returned in 2021 with Nurture, his magnum opus, and after two years of hard touring released a third album, SMILE! :D — the yang to Nurture's yin. Where the first was about desperately looking for meaning enough to keep going, the second says the same things from a more nihilistic angle. On it he holds the toxicity of fan culture, and what it has done to him, under a microscope, while also plainly having fun with it; even at his most sincere he uses a witty aside to release the tension, like someone making a self-deprecating joke in the middle of a revealing conversation.
