On The Smashing Pumpkins' album Aghori Mhori Mei, Billy Corgan and the drummer Jimmy Chamberlin wrote the riffs instrumentally first, with no vocals, pulling from across the band's own catalogue — a Siamese Dream riff here, a Mellon Collie riff there, Gish riffs elsewhere. What Corgan was after was the band's early sound. He admits they are far better players than they were thirty years ago, so reconnecting meant remembering what had made him want to rock in the first place rather than the polished modern way of doing it. The question he set himself: what kind of riff would you be willing to risk your life on?
