Hippo Campus are a Minnesota indie-rock band formed in 2013 after the members met at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists: Jake Luppen (lead vocals, guitar), Nathan Stocker (lead guitar, vocals), Zach Sutton (bass, keyboard) and Whistler Isaiah Allen (drums, vocals). They studied jazz and classical there, and Luppen also trained in opera. Across four albums and six EPs they have passed a billion streams. Their fourth LP, Flood, came out in 2024 on Psychic Hotline. Over the five years before it they wrote more than a hundred songs and put in long hours with their longtime producer Caleb Wright, then scrapped everything and started again with Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch — the record was finally cut in ten days. The band call it the best album they have ever made, and say it happened once they dropped their preconceptions about how Hippo Campus had to sound.
